It's not a bad CPU for gaming at 1080p on single monitors. When paired with the proper GPU, it'll still deliver a generally enjoyable gaming experience on the latest games.

For gaming at 1440p on a 3-panel wrap-around immersion gaming setup... it's a processor that should be put out to pasture.

While it's true that GPU will generally have a greater impact on game performance than CPU, there are limits, and the processor in this case serves as a bottleneck that forces slower RAM and provides other bottlenecks to the system.

Like most things, it depends on the gaming experience you're after. I'd generally say that the CPU has a few years of life left in it, but a year or two from now I'd definitely be looking to replace it.

Most recent games are built around "CPU Optimizations", "Multi-Core Optimizations", "AMD Mantle API", "NVIDIA Enhanced DX11" and soon to come DX12, all of these technologies are about to make CPU a secondary consideration for a gaming PC where CPU will have very less impact if it's 4 or more cores.

That being said, the Phenom II X4 955BE may be a specialized processor even today and will handle all games easily. Newer games would demand even more less on the CPU side and more on GPU side
